How to Get an ITIN or Tax ID In The USA
FAS CPA & Consultants
Every taxpayer in the United States is issued with an identification number for tax purposes. This helps the IRS to apply the correct taxation rules and laws to your circumstances. For example, individuals are issued with ITIN (Individual Tax Identification Number) regardless of their immigration status or residency. Businesses, on the other hand, get Tax IDs, also known as EIN (Employer Identification Number). In this article we will explain how to get an ITIN or Tax ID, whichever applies to you.
What is an ITIN?
The ITIN is tax identification number, issued by the IRS to individuals who are not eligible for a Social Security Number, but have tax obligations in the US. It doesn’t depend on the immigration status and it is only used for reporting federal tax. The ITIN consists of 9 digits from 900-70-0000 to 999-99-999. Generally, resident or non-resident aliens, who need to file a tax return in the US, but don’t qualify for SSN, and their dependents and/or spouses, need to obtain an ITIN.

How to get an ITIN?
There is very detailed information about everything you need to know about ITIN on the IRS website, but we will break down the process of application for your convenience.
⇒ Fill in Form W-7
⇒ Attach it to your federal income tax return (check if you qualify for an exception)
⇒ Include your original passport or ID, as well as foreign status documents. Certified copies may be accepted.
⇒ Send to this address:
⇒ Internal Revenue Service
⇒ Austin Service Center
⇒ ITIN Operation
⇒ P.O. Box 149342, Austin, TX 78714-9342
You could also use the services of an IRS-authorized Acceptance Agent.
If your application is successful, you will receive your ITIN in the post within seven weeks.
What is a Tax ID?
A Tax ID is often referred to as an Employer Identification Number (EIN) and is issued by the IRS to businesses. These may be sole-proprietorship, partnerships, corporations or any other business entity. You may need a Tax ID for a number of reasons, for example, hiring employees, starting a new venture or establishing a pension plan.

How to Apply for a Tax ID?
There are four ways in which you can apply for your Tax ID:
⇒ Online
⇒ Over the phone
⇒ By fax
⇒ By post
The quickest and, perhaps, easiest way is online. It should be done by a person responsible for the business. We recommend that you have all of your documentation ready before you start because you will have to complete the application in one go. Once you are done, you will get your Tax ID instantly and can use it for various purposes immediately. You will only have to wait for a couple of weeks if you want to file your federal tax return electronically. Tax IDs take up to that amount of time to be fully established in the system.
Application by phone is only available to international taxpayers. It can be an expensive option because it isn’t a free line and you will have to answer a lot of questions. At the end of the conversation you will be given your Tax ID, so be sure to write it down safely.
Applying by fax is also fairly easy. You need to fill in Form SS-4 and send to your state’s IRS fax number. If you haven’t made any mistakes, you will receive your Tax ID within 4 days.
For those who prefer applying by post, the process is not much different – you will have to send correctly filled Form SS-4. However, getting your Tax ID may take up to four weeks
Generally, you will need to provide:
⇒ Name of the business
⇒ Address
⇒ Applicant’s SSN
⇒ Type of business structure.
⇒ Field and nature of the business (specifying products or services).
⇒ Anticipated number of employees.
⇒ Reason for needing a Tax ID.
